Good accounting advice leads to remarkable results. But good advice becomes great when you have someone on your team who understands your industry – and few understand that better than our Partner, James.
Specialising in the commercial sector, seafood and agricultural industries, James helps his clients focus on both business and personal financial goals. He places high value on understanding the key value drivers of business and works hard to develop strong relationships with his clients and other important professionals in town.
James began his accounting career straight out of school. He worked for a rural accounting firm backed by a solid group of mentors, including a farm consultant who taught him the power of grass in the farming sector and developed his passion for the industry. From here, James worked in both the commercial sector and public practice. Including five years of experience in Australia in senior operational and commercial positions for an international mining company. He then returned to New Zealand and took up the role of Commercial Manager at Fonterra, before joining McCulloch & Partners in 2016 where he was admitted to Partnership only two years later.
Also heavily involved in the fish industry, James often surprises people when he tells them that alongside working as an accountant, he sells live lobster to China. Through this, he has gained an understanding of marketing, the Chinese market, and the export sector, all of which build upon his knowledge base for other industries.
He keeps himself busy as Chairperson of two local fishing companies, and the chairman the Southland Chartered Accountants, Australia and New Zealand Local Leadership Teams, and gives back to the community with committed roles within not for profits organisations. To relax, James enjoys spending time with his young family in Te Anau.
If you need an accountant who is passionate, experienced, and a real Jack of all trades – reach out to James.
